UW-Health Kids offers free online tools to manage digital habits

MADISON, Wis. (WBAY) – UW-Health Kids has partnered with the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) to launch two free online tools to help families set up digital usage management plans.

The first tool is the Family Media Plan, which was revamped after its launch in 2016. Dr. Megan Moreno, adolescent health expert at UW Health Kids, said the tool is now more user-friendly.

“Families can make individual plans for each child in the family with the platform. Now they can also save their data and come back to it and change the plan,” she said.

According to Dr. Moreno, this flexibility works best for families who turn their summer media rules into school year rules. The update is the result of research to improve the online tool.

“We did a study that tested the old version of the Family Media Plan. One of the things we found was that families and their kids, in particular, get really excited when they’re on the platform. They were selecting all the rules, but what he heard was that there was still no plan to put those rules in place,” she said.

The updated tool helps families clarify the rules while offering guidance for following the plan.

The second free tool is a 10-question quiz to help parents determine if their child is ready for their first phone. Dr. Moreno said this is a common question asked by his patients. The questionnaire was designed with the help of scientific research.

“It doesn’t tell a parent whether or not a child should have a phone, but it does help you think through with the child some of the issues that might arise if you have one now,” she said. .
